The Gods Themselves

The chickens flew the coop as soon as the chickens came home to roost, which was, as always, too late. The thinking had been, who needs a prayer if you have a wing? Well, there’s stupidity and then there’s bad luck, which is a horse of a different kettle of shooting fish in a barrel of monkeys. But they’re alike in being inescapable.

The airline may have coped poorly with extraordinary events, but until then it had a good safety record, meaning that it was skilled with ordinary events. Both matter, but here the whole aviation establishment made a careless mistake, and one airline and its passengers paid.
