Once upon a time, at the far left end of the crabby old world, squires squabbled back and forth and back and forth without ever getting much of anywhere, and so came to seek the moment’s favorable winds and to see peace as balance. At the distant right end, mandarins minded an empire which alternately united to subdue its neighbors and fractured to fight itself. They came to seek sea room for maneuver and to see peace as dominance. Along the broad upper border, they came to see peace as space, and the roll of local notions goes on and on around the globe, so it’s funny how people everywhere all act alike.
