1 June 2015 - South China Sea

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

The Short Term Is the Only Term

I know how to solve the South China Sea problem: The U.S. should buy off Haiti’s claim to Navassa Island, an uninhabited dot administered by the U.S. but near Haiti, which Haiti has some plausible historical claim to. Noting the precedent, China would take over the South China Sea, not forcibly with ships and airstrips, but peacefully with yuan diplomacy. Risk of war averted, problem solved!

clue:

Why has buying and selling territory gone out of fashion? We might be able to solve some disputes that way.

Not this one, though. China claims sovereignty over the waters, which suggests that China would abuse control over the busy sea lanes that many countries depend on.

take oh take this clue away
