The U.S. Government’s response to the Encryption Crisis is the Clipper Chip. If you have a a Clipper Chip in your phone and you call somebody else who has one too, then nobody can listen in except law enforcement. There are safeguards so even law enforcement can’t listen in without a warrant.

How can it be a bad idea? It’s a pun on a great American success, the clipper ship.
