The downside of an astonishing new insight is that you forget
what you used to know merely because it is incompatible.

Early genetics researchers had no trouble explaining altruism—it
was due to group selection. Modern researchers have to work hard
to explain altruism, because the powerful mathematical theory of
selection operates only on the level of individuals, where altruism
can be justified only in narrow circumstances. The powerful theory
is still an oversimplification.
