9 May 2008 - auto styling

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

reporter: What does conservatism mean to your company?
auto stylist: Following the fads as precisely as possible.
auto executive: That’s right—and the fads are coordinated industry-wide to meet strategic imperatives.
reporter: So what’s the reasoning behind the recent shift to a radically different look?
auto stylist: The new styling is officially described as “retro”, but in reality only certain elements hearken back. Basically, we’re giving big cars the same outline that small cars used to have.
auto executive: We foresaw that fuel prices would continue to rise. Consumers will be looking for smaller cars, and we need to maintain profits.
