Analyzing a Mixed Metaphor

What is all this smoke about “carbon footprint,” and how can we reduce it to a carbon fingerprint? On the first question, if you’re really blaming it on transportation you should call it “carbon tire tracks.” On the second, you can never balance the carbon budget by passing laws and incentives; that doesn’t even work on the money budget. We need a technical solution. With nanotechnology, we’ll turn more oil into hardware instead of into smoke.
