The Invisible Hook

Piracy for ransom works the same way that a bank run works: It reverses the usual promise of capitalism, so that the interests of individual decision-makers run counter to the common interest. They both create runaway positive feedback, so they’re intrinsically destabilizing. Isn’t that great? My plan to become king of the world is working perfectly.
