If you consider the range of all possible communication protocols, then any two human languages are as alike as two peas in a soup. Yet when two cultures first meet, they always misunderstand each other. So when the aliens land, unable to distinguish Navaho from Esperanto, what will we do? The law will give space aliens the same status as animals, science will want to study them, and nobody else will have any realistic ideas. The correct plan will be to declare them an endangered species.
