10 February 2013 - single-stream recycling

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Feel the Burn

recycler: Most Americans now have single-stream recycling.
public: Thanks, it’s much easier!
recycler: So we’re already sorting materials at a plant.
public: Blah blah, time to check my tweets.
recycler: Why not take the last step? There’s no need for you to separate your own trash, we can do it for you.
public: Are you NUTS?
recycler: It’s well-established, it’s called—
public: No no no, to do good we must suffer!

clue:

The recycler was about to say “dirty materials recovery facility,” a plant for sorting out recyclables from raw trash. There are advantages and disadvantages, but no matter: Recycling is not about the environment, it’s about public relations.

take oh take this clue away
