Social status rarely makes sense, but what makes the least sense is the social status of mistakes. A careless oversight is more acceptable than a strategy error with the same consequences: We say “Oops, I didn’t see you there” and not “Sorry, I took the corner blind.” Except errors of groupthink, of course, those make perfect sense.
