The most recent mass extinction, the one that tripped up the dinosaurs, was caused by a rock from outer space. All other great mass extinctions were caused by complex arrays of interrelated factors, or in other words, we don’t know. The recent financial crisis was caused by risk-taking and excess debt, but what we should do about it depends on a complex array of interrelated factors.

The Ordovician mass extinction was probably caused by a sudden ice age... whose cause is not understood. The others have no agreed cause.
