In everyday life, paying costs now and receiving benefits some time later is called “thinking ahead”: You pack your lunch now and eat it then. In economics, it’s called “investing” and it’s basic. But in politics, it’s called “reform” and it’s barely possible. So let’s think ahead: One cheap and practical investment to reduce the distance bewteen political reality and reality is to accept the Facebook/NSA surveillance worldview, watch the electorate and report the results to our fearful leaders. They will learn for the first time what we really think, instead of what we say we think. Now there’s a reform that could pass!
