Pitiless exploitation only works on the pitiable; others can defend themselves. All the abuses of the powerful—wage theft by businesses, unjustified police violence, poor regulation, mass surveillance, the excess political influence of special interests, bad airline food—all of them can addressed by reducing the income gap, clawing back money from the 1% to the middle class. But we’re too pitiable to do it.
