What are the nicest places in the world to live? Americans might prefer California or Hawaii. Costa Rica and New Zealand are pleasant and well-run. For my part, I am fond of the culture and climate of Iceland. What else do these places have in common? They are all seismically unstable. I think there is a hidden conservation law at work: At any place which is too nice, the earth may swallow you.
