26 August 2018 - moderate vs populist

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Liberal Europeans feel comfortable when a moderate like Macron wins, and worry when populists like the Five Star Movement win. They haven’t thought it out. When politics is highly polarized, voters for the winning side become complacent and don’t follow through, while the losers are angry and energized. That is how the U.S. got Obama, and then Trump. At each flip-flop, policies swerve violently and upset previous plans. Think it out, and you realize that it’s the ideal system for a world gone crazy.

I think the effect is much stronger in a two party system, though. More parties means more degrees of freedom, as measured with a freedom thermometer.

give me a clue so sweet and true
