We Can Only Expect the Familiar

Why are we so easily surprised that others are different, when we knew it all along? Is it a form of optimism, because being different is bad? Does it operate with conformity pressure to consolidate the culture? I don’t think so, because we see the same surprising surprise every time a space probe explores a new place. I think we’re just that dumb.
