Vaccine Nationalism to Save the World

Americans see the national COVID vaccination program as struggling with disorganization, and they’re not wrong. But only a handful of countries in the world have vaccinated more of their population. The big thing is to acquire lots of vaccine fast, which the U.S. did by urgent exercise of wealth and power. In fact, though most were slower, all the rich democracies bought enough for several times their population. It won’t keep, so by this time next year they’ll all be transferring it to those who still need it.

What is in those contracts, exactly? It’s always reported as buying doses in advance, which makes sense because we have to ensure that the makers have the funds to scale production. But I won’t be surprised if some contracts have escape clauses.
