In the imaginary world inhabited by humans, bridges are made of glass, and though the equations of rational decision-making say that we shouldn’t, we take account of the water that has passed under them. Even those who know better than to panic are looking at the water below their feet and trying to judge sensitively when the panic is over, to make the greatest possible profit—using the irrational to attempt the impossible. Meanwhile, in my imaginary world, where I’m rational, I should be getting rich any day now.

I moved money into stocks this week. Anyone with a good long-term investment plan that includes U.S. or European stocks should be considering that too, to rebalance their portfolio.
