Major national goals, like China’s goal to annex the South China Sea or North Korea’s goal to keep dry under a nuclear umbrella, carry important messages and are granted diplomatic immunity: They cannot be arrested by diplomacy. Yet actions other than diplomacy may backfire disastrously. Politicians, and those who seek to influence policy via the public advice-o-sphere, cannot admit it. War does not need to show the tip of its mast over the horizon before truth is a casualty.

For example, the Trump trade sanctions on North Korea backfired, since none of North Korea’s neighbors is going along: China, Russia, and even South Korea. Luckily it’s not a disastrous failure.
